26: You are called to expand.
Tuesday Sep 15, 2015
Tuesday Sep 15, 2015
The game of it is getting more alive
each day, refusing to close
or to stifle your whole being
in the face of despair.
The trick of it is opening relentlessly,
letting all the world reach you:
exposing your neck to a creature who may bite.
Refusing to kill off your most vital bits when it does.
...and when you find those who are more alive than you,
ask their secrets.
(This is the only one
I know so far.)
Expansion, contraction, and the best obituary you can imagine. It's light and dark, easy and oh-so-difficult, in this episode of That's What She Said.

K

Let's do it together. (That's what she said.)

Today, with lovely human Jeanette Leblanc, we talk about the hard work of expanding and contracting as part of the creative process, pretending your creative work isn't necessary, and other fun stuff that all the creatives face at one point or another.
We talk about the heartbreak of never quite feeling like an artist and of being chased by the muse and wanting/not wanting to be found simultaneously.

Tuesday Aug 11, 2015
Tuesday Aug 11, 2015
Today, in an interview-slash-problem-solving podcast with Jenny Stein, she admits, “I hate talking about my work.”
We talk about the universal laws of doing your work — Jenny is stuck on #5 — and simple solutions to the problem itself. (Including the feeling that social media is a never-ending newborn that demands attention and shits on you every now and again.)
We also talk about why doing your work makes you so damn uncomfortable, how to work around it, and why I love Instagram best of all. Listen in if you’ve ever felt like you hate hate HATE talking about what you do, even though you love it so much it hurts.

19: Worshiping at the altar of Busy
Tuesday Aug 04, 2015
Tuesday Aug 04, 2015
I finished writing a book! And do you know what happened?
Absolutely nothing.
The world doesn’t hold a parade or launch surprise fireworks or ship you a case of champagne because you finished a book or completed that project or sold that thing or lost those pounds. It keeps on keeping on, and it’s your job to celebrate well.
In this episode of That’s What She Said, we talk about the importance of celebrating, of refusing to move the goal line (i.e. I wanted to lose 3 pounds but then I did that so now I want to lose 30), about saying “yes” to living, and refusing to worship at the altar of Busy. (When you find a worshipper, unsubscribe. Unfollow and walk away slowly.)
Let’s talk space. Freedom. Time. White space. And fake tattoos with cocktails.
If you'd like more space, freedom, time, white space, and cocktails in Hawaii, check out the Find Your Voice Workshop.

K

13: Information Overload (and Overlords)
Tuesday Jun 23, 2015
Tuesday Jun 23, 2015
You're going to start reading those books you've purchased or working through those programs you've been hoarding on your hard drive or listening to those language recordings tomorrow. Or next week. Or next month. Or this summer.
You've got no time right now, and you haven't had time for the past few years. But someday...soon...
In this episode, we talk about all the ways that technology can be simultaneously lovely and overwhelming, and we address questions like, how do you make space for what's important? How do you decipher your voice from all the others? ...and how do you know who to listen to, in the end?
